Building Materials

The materials used in building construction imply all the craftship on an era and tell us much about its technical and financial resources.

The prime basic material for public buildings was the local limestone, but clay materials, mortar and stucco work were of great importance as well. Building or accessory metal fittings, like iron gratings for windows and door locks, and lead plumbing were also part of the construction.

Numerous revetment plaques attest the great input made in the embellishment of the city public buildings, using abundant marbles and breccia from distant provinces and conjugating them with the local workshops mosaics.
