Among the largest monuments constructed in the city of Conimbriga were the large, public thermae, for which the model copied the imperial architecture owed to Apolodorus of Damascus, preferred architect of Trajan (the first emperor born in Spain). The grand Baths of the South were established in the same location as their predecessors, but their construction involved a major program of demolition that permitted the thermae to take maximum advantage of this location for the users of the thermae to be able to enjoy the magnificent scenery south of Conimbriga, something that is still possible for current visitors.
